The 2026 BC Dash Cam Mandate: Fleet Requirements & Timeline

Pablo Calderon Ramirez
July 7, 2026

After a unanimous decision by the provincial legislature, British Columbia is set to become the first Canadian province to require dashboard cameras in commercial vehicles operating on provincial highways. This bill is aiming to improve highway safety, increase accountability, and ensure clear evidence is available following any collisions.

The BC legislation follows years of discussion around commercial vehicle safety, especially along Highway 5 (the Coquihalla Corridor), where the need for objective collision evidence has remained a prominent concern. The BC Trucking Association has publicly supported the bill, highlighting that approximately 75-80% of collisions involving commercial vehicles are not caused by the commercial driver, making reliable, on-road footage a meaningful protection for drivers and fleet operators alike.

Once the bill receives Royal Assent (the formal signing process by BC’s lieutenant-governor that makes it a law), fleets will have six months to comply before enforcement begins. It is expected that the bill will come into effect during early 2027.

For fleet managers, this decision has raised an important question: what does the new law actually require, and what should fleets do now to prepare?

What are the Requirements?

Under the legislation, fleet operators must ensure that their commercial vehicles travelling on BC highways are equipped with an outward-facing dashboard camera that continuously records the road ahead while the vehicle is operating. Specifically, the camera must have a minimum resolution of 1080p and have night-vision capacities. Moreover, operators must ensure that the camera’s view is not obstructed at any time and that footage is retained for a minimum of 72 hours.

Who Will Be Affected?

The BC Dash Cam Mandate will affect commercial vehicles operating on provincial highways. While fleet operators should continue monitoring regulatory updates as implementation details are finalized, the legislation is expected to impact a wide range of organizations, including trucking companies, construction fleets, delivery and transportation providers, municipal vehicle operators, and service fleets.

For some organizations, compliance may be straightforward if dashboard cameras are already installed across their fleet. However, operators with older equipment or inconsistent camera coverage should begin reviewing their vehicle inventories now to identify potential gaps before enforcement begins.

What Should Fleets Do Now?

Although the BC Dash Cam Mandate timeline indicates that enforcement is still several months away, fleet operators can begin preparing today. Taking a proactive approach will help organizations avoid last-minute implementation challenges while ensuring a smooth transition when the legislation comes into force.

  1. The first step is to assess existing fleet equipment. Operators should determine which vehicles already have dashboard cameras installed, whether those systems remain in good working condition, and if camera coverage is consistent across the entire fleet. This review can help identify older hardware that may need to be upgraded before the compliance deadline.
  2. Fleets should review their video management policies. As dash camera adoption increases, organizations will need clear procedures governing footage retention, incident retrieval, driver privacy, data security, and access permissions. Establishing these policies early can help prevent operational and legal complications later on.
  3. For organizations evaluating new technology, the mandate presents an opportunity to look beyond basic compliance. Modern fleet camera systems often combine high-definition video recording with GPS tracking, cloud-based footage retrieval, driver coaching tools, and AI-camera safety alerts. Selecting a scalable solution today can help fleets improve safety and operational visibility while meeting regulatory requirements.
  4. Finally, communication with drivers is vital for a successful implementation. Clearly explaining why cameras are being installed, how footage will be used, and the safety objectives behind the mandate can help improve acceptance and reduce concerns. Many fleet operators find that presenting dash cameras as a tool that protects drivers, not simply monitors them, has resulted in stronger adoption and higher driver satisfaction.

Benefits Outside of Compliance

While the mandate was introduced to improve accountability and highway safety, many fleets have already discovered additional benefits from implementing camera systems. Dash cameras can help accelerate incident investigations, reduce insurance disputes, support driver coaching initiatives, and provide protection against fraudulent claims. They can also give managers greater visibility into day-to-day fleet operations, helping identify opportunities to improve safety, reduce costs, and drive efficiency. As a result, many organizations view dash cameras not only as a compliance requirement but as a long-term investment in fleet performance

Preparing for the Compliance Deadline

The BC Dash Cam Mandate represents a significant development for commercial fleets operating in British Columbia. Organizations that begin planning now will be in a stronger position to meet the new requirements, avoid rushed deployments, and support safer operations across their fleet.

Whether your organization is reviewing existing equipment or evaluating new technology, now is the ideal time to assess current capabilities, identify potential gaps, and develop a plan for compliance before enforcement begins.
PosiTrace helps fleets across Canada improve safety and visibility through GPS tracking, AI dash cameras, and fleet management solutions. Frequently Asked Questions

When does the BC Dash Cam Mandate take effect?

Once the legislation receives Royal Assent, commercial fleet operators will have six months to comply before enforcement begins. Based on the current timeline, the requirements are expected to take effect in early 2027.

Which vehicles are affected by the BC Dash Cam Mandate?

The mandate is expected to apply to commercial vehicles operating on British Columbia’s provincial highways. This includes vehicles used by trucking companies, construction fleets, delivery providers, municipal fleets, transportation providers, and other service vehicles.

Are AI dash cameras required?

No. The legislation specifies minimum camera requirements but does not require AI-powered cameras. However, AI dash cameras can provide additional safety features such as collision warnings, distracted driving detection, and driver coaching that extend beyond basic compliance.

How can fleets prepare before enforcement begins?

Fleet operators should assess their existing camera systems, review video retention and privacy policies, identify any compliance gaps, and communicate upcoming changes with drivers. Starting early can help avoid last-minute implementation challenges.
